AG Presses 51 Gas Stations After Fuel Check Complaints

RALEIGH, N.C. — Attorney General Jeff Jackson’s office has now chased 51 driver complaints against gas stations through the N.C. Fuel Check program, pressing retailers to show whether temporary gas tax savings reached the pump.

Forty-two contacts are inquiry letters asking stations for a quick explanation after motorists said prices never fell. Nine more went to the N.C. Department of Agriculture over gaps between the curb sign and the meter. Getting a letter is not the same as being found in violation.

Session Law 2026-62, signed by Gov. Josh Stein in October, pauses the state’s fuel levy of 41 cents a gallon on gasoline and diesel from Oct. 10 through Nov. 30. Jackson stood up Fuel Check so drivers could flag retailers they think are pocketing the break instead of cutting prices.

Jackson said drivers have been the state’s eyes and ears and that most stations appear to be complying, while his office digs deeper where reports keep landing. Two weeks earlier, the office said more than 470 tips had already come in.

Inquiry letters went to retailers scattered statewide, including Guilford, Avery, Buncombe, Mecklenburg, Onslow, Dare and Watauga counties. Agriculture referrals covered Madison, Buncombe, Forsyth, Guilford, Nash, Onslow and Wake. Eastern counties on the inquiry list include Currituck, Dare, Halifax, Jones, Onslow and Pender.

The temporary cut was sold as pocketbook relief at a moment when household fuel costs still dominate kitchen-table budgets. Jackson’s team says broad compliance is the norm, but the 51 follow-ups show the office will keep checking stations that draw repeated complaints before the tax pause expires.

Drivers can still file reports on the Department of Justice Fuel Check page or by dialing 1-877-5-NO-SCAM while the tax pause lasts through the end of November.
