Strong El Niño Tilts NC Winter Toward Wetter Pattern

RALEIGH, N.C. — A very strong El Niño is tilting North Carolina’s coming winter toward a wetter pattern, based on the federal winter outlook and Southeast climate guidance released as the cold season begins.

NOAA’s U.S. Winter Outlook for December 2026 through February 2027 leans wetter than average across the southern United States and along the East Coast, the belt that includes North Carolina. Drought is expected to ease or end across much of the Southeast and parts of the East Coast as the storm track slides south and east.

That setup often means more Gulf and Atlantic systems, including a higher chance of nor’easters and coastal storms that bring lasting wind and heavy rain. Natural-resource managers in the Southeast are being told to brace for ponding, localized flooding and groundwater recharge after months of drought, while also watching for erosion from repeated soakings.

Snow remains the open question. El Niño winters in the Carolinas often run milder than average, and the same climate pattern that boosts total precipitation does not reliably stack deep snow in the Piedmont. Earlier strong events brought both a multi-inch Triad snowfall in late December 1997 and a very wet, mostly snowless December in Greensboro in 2015.

Climate reviews of moderate-to-strong El Niño winters point to roughly one to three extra inches of seasonal snow for the Piedmont Triad on average, with larger anomalies in the mountains, yet several strong El Niño years still finished below normal for snowfall. Federal seasonal outlooks skip seasonal snowfall totals because those stay unpredictable more than about a week ahead.

Forecasters also put about a 90 percent chance on the strong El Niño lasting from fall into winter, a setup that could ease or end drought across much of the state even if sledding snow stays scarce. The next NOAA three-month outlook refresh is due Nov. 19.

What's Happening
What does the winter outlook say for North Carolina?
Federal guidance favors above-average precipitation and improving drought odds across the Southeast and East Coast, including North Carolina.
Does that mean a snowy winter?
Not necessarily. El Niño often brings warmer Carolinas winters, and seasonal snowfall is not forecast months ahead.
Could drought ease?
Yes. NOAA expects drought to improve or end across much of the Southeast if the wetter storm track holds.
