RALEIGH, N.C. — NC State has fired football coach Dave Doeren in Raleigh in the middle of his 14th season, ending the longest run of any head coach in program history one day after a home loss to Stanford.
Athletics director Boo Corrigan announced Saturday that Doeren was relieved of his duties effective immediately. Corrigan thanked Doeren for his service, said he had always represented the university with pride and praised the passion he brought to the job over 14 years.
Todd Goebbel, who coaches the running backs and coordinates special teams, will lead the Wolfpack as interim head coach for the rest of the season. Goebbel joined the staff in 2019. The school said a national search for a permanent replacement starts right away.
The move came after Stanford, a touchdown underdog, beat the Wolfpack 31-28 on Friday night, dropping NC State to 3-4. An earlier 35-31 loss to Vanderbilt on Sept. 19 had already stirred frustration among fans.
Doeren, 54, leaves as the winningest coach the program has had, with a record of 98-74. His teams sent more than two dozen players to the NFL draft and regularly beat rival North Carolina, and the 2021 Wolfpack knocked off a top-10 Clemson team in Raleigh while unranked. But NC State never reached 10 wins or claimed an ACC title under him, and his conference record finished just below .500.
Under his contract, the university owes Doeren a buyout of $9.75 million. His tenure ran long enough to place him among the five longest-serving head coaches at the 138 FBS programs. In his statement, Corrigan also wished Doeren and his family the best as they move on from the program.
