Raleigh Voters Approve $203 Million Housing and Road Bonds

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh voters gave a clear yes on Tuesday to two city bond questions worth a combined $203 million, one for housing and one for transportation.

With results in from all 111 city precincts, the housing bond won close to 65% of the vote and the transportation bond took 68%. Each question was set at $101.5 million.

City officials say the borrowing will not push up property taxes. The debt will be repaid from the Steady State fund, a pot the city builds from yearly sales and property tax revenue to pay for large capital projects.

On the housing side, $57.6 million goes to building new affordable units and preserving existing ones, $21.5 million is set aside for major housing projects, and $12 million supports the city’s response to homelessness. Another $10.4 million covers help for homebuyers and programs that let older residents stay in their homes.

The transportation money includes $51.5 million for work on Marsh Creek Road, the western section of Trawick Road and Ebenezer Church Road, plus lanes for regular traffic on the south end of the planned bus rapid transit line. A $40 million share pays for a five-year push on walking and biking routes, including more than 5 miles of sidewalk and 50 miles of bike facilities, and $10 million is reserved for traffic calming and safer intersections on neighborhood streets.

The votes follow earlier city bond packages approved in 2017 and 2020, which paid for projects such as the Atlantic Avenue roadway work and the Milner Commons housing development. Wake County voters also approved a $680 million school bond for repairs at 55 buildings on the same ballot.
