RALEIGH, N.C. — A routine Thursday morning at Millbrook Magnet High School in Raleigh, N.C., turned into a birth announcement when the school’s security officer went into labor on campus and staff members helped bring a baby girl into the world.
The emergency began with a radio call reporting a medical problem in one of the school bathrooms. Principal Monica Sawyer responded along with the school bookkeeper, who has training as a doula and talked the principal through what to do.
The baby came within minutes. Once the principal heard the baby crying, the bookkeeper sent staff to grab a blanket from the front office so the newborn could be warmed up right away. The principal later described it as a moment she will never forget, and said the staff response was quick from the first radio call.
In a letter sent to staff and families afterward, the principal reported that mother and daughter were both doing well and welcomed the girl as the school’s newest and smallest Wildcat. The school has already ordered baby-size spirit wear so the pair can cheer on the Wildcats together, and it set up a page where the community can support the family.
The newborn does not have a name yet. The principal has floated Brook, as a nod to Millbrook, though the decision belongs to the mother.
Millbrook is part of the Wake County Public School System, which ranks among the largest employers in the Raleigh area. In her letter, the principal called it a special day to be a Wildcat, and the school has asked families to join in congratulating the new mother.
