RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will host a livestream fireside chat and tele-town hall Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 6 to 7 p.m. to explain how new federal and state laws change NC Medicaid, including a work and community engagement requirement.
Panelists include Melanie Bush, deputy secretary for NC Medicaid; Sarah A. Gregosky, assistant secretary and deputy Medicaid director; and Gina Hamilton, deputy director of member operations oversight. They plan to cover recent federal rule updates, who must meet the new engagement rules, how to prepare, and where to find help.
Federal changes already ended coverage for many non-citizens as of Oct. 1, 2026. Additional eligibility changes for people ages 19 through 64 without a disability begin Jan. 1, 2027. NCDHHS points members to Medicaid.nc.gov/changes and to local departments of social services for case-specific guidance.
The department also released bilingual Know Whats Next materials so community groups can share information about renewals and coverage options. Officials say NC Medicaid covers more than 3 million children, older adults, people with disabilities, veterans and working residents, and more than half the population in many rural counties.
Viewers can watch on NCDHHS Facebook, X and YouTube accounts and submit questions online. People can also dial 855-756-7520, extension 137698, to join by phone.
The session is aimed at households that need clear timelines before January, when the next wave of eligibility rules hits working-age adults who do not have a disability designation.
