West Branch, Ohio — Students Build and Raffle Off Storage Shed to Support Construction Program

Students at West Branch High School are fundraising for their Construction Trades program through a new initiative involving a recently built storage shed. The 10-by-12-foot shed was constructed by students as part of the school’s Career Connections Apprenticeship Program, which emphasizes hands-on learning and skill development in various carpentry techniques.

Hands-On Learning in Construction Trades

The Construction Trades program enables students to gain practical experience by working on real projects. Throughout the program, students learn essential skills such as wall construction, roofing, foundation layout, trim carpentry, soffit and fascia installation, rafter layout, sheathing, and joist placement. The program spans three years, with students completing a comprehensive coursework that prepares them for careers in construction and carpentry.

Upon completing the third-year course, students earn multiple qualifications, including a Career Connections Certification, 12 alternative graduation credits, and a state certification as apprentice carpenters. These credentials serve to enhance their employment prospects and practical knowledge in the field.

Selling Raffle Tickets to Support Future Students

The newly built shed will be raffled off to the public to raise funds for the ongoing needs of the Construction Trades program. Raffle tickets are priced at $20 each and can be purchased at various locations, including during home football games, at the high school office, or directly from students enrolled in Rodger Sharp’s Building Construction Trades class.

The raffle drawing is scheduled to take place during the final home football game on October 17, 2025. All proceeds collected from ticket sales will directly benefit current and future students participating in the Construction Trades program, supporting their educational expenses and project opportunities.

Community and School Support

Superintendent Micki Egli emphasized that the project highlights the dedication and skills of the students while fostering sustainability for the program. The initiative demonstrates how involving students in real-world projects can provide valuable educational experiences while also raising funds to ensure the program’s continued success.
