RALEIGH, N.C. — A person who pulled over to help another motorist on Interstate 540 in Raleigh was hit and killed late Saturday, shutting down the westbound side of the highway into the early hours of Sunday. As of midnight, traffic heading west on that part of I-540 was still being kept away from the scene while investigators worked.

The Raleigh Police Department said the deadly collision took place close to the highway’s Triangle Town Boulevard exit at about 11 p.m. Police said the good Samaritan had gotten out of their own vehicle to check on a driver who was stopped in the median. A westbound driver then struck both the good Samaritan and that person’s vehicle.

Investigators have not said how the crash unfolded. Police have not released the name or age of the person who died, and they have not said whether the driver who hit the victim remained at the scene or whether any charges will be filed.

The state’s DriveNC traffic system listed I-540 westbound closed between Exit 17 and Exit 14 in Wake County because of the crash. The closure was logged starting at 11:11 p.m. Saturday, and the listing was last updated at 12:19 a.m. Sunday, when the westbound lanes near the crash site were still blocked.

The state tracked the shutdown as DriveNC event 2600991. That listing does not report whether anyone died, and city police had not posted their own written account of the crash by early Sunday. Drivers heading toward that part of the beltline Sunday morning should check DriveNC or call 511 for the latest lane information before they travel, since no notice of the lanes reopening had been posted.
