Raleigh, N.C. — N.C. State former director of sports medicine faces a more than $2 million bond on charges of sexually abusing former Wolfpack male athletes, with the case centered in Wake County courts in Raleigh.

A Wake County grand jury indicted the former trainer on Sept. 14 on nine felony counts of sexual contact under pretext of medical treatment and 23 counts of sexual battery, a misdemeanor. He was arrested in Florida on Sept. 23 on out-of-state fugitive warrants from North Carolina.

Authorities brought the former trainer to North Carolina on Thursday and a magistrate set bond at $2.25 million, according to online court records. He appeared virtually in court Friday with his next hearing scheduled for Nov. 2.

The former trainer was originally accused of misconduct in civil lawsuits, first from a single athlete in August 2022 then from 31 in a complaint filed earlier this year. The criminal charges are tied to 14 victims covering allegations ranging from October 2016 to fall 2021.

Athletes have previously accused the former trainer of improperly touching their genitals during massages and intrusive observation while collecting urine samples during drug testing. Attorneys for the former trainer have previously denied any wrongdoing by their client.

A matching account published locally also reported the $2.25 million bond, the Sept. 14 indictment counts, the Florida arrest on fugitive warrants, and the Nov. 2 next hearing date after the Friday virtual appearance.

Wake County Justice Center at 316 Fayetteville St, Raleigh, NC 27601 handles major criminal dockets tied to the capital city. Mayor Janet Cowell office and District Attorney Lorrin Freeman office are among the public offices residents look to for court process questions that do not comment on pending evidence.

N.C. State is based in Raleigh, and the case continues to draw attention from alumni and current students watching how Wake County courts move the felony and misdemeanor counts toward the November hearing.
